Student & family guides

Build a study abroad budget you can actually compare.

A low tuition figure is only one part of an overseas study decision. Compare the full financial commitment using a written, course-specific breakdown and a consistent time period.

Discuss your study plans

Use the university’s current fee schedule

Ask for the official programme name, intake, tuition schedule and any compulsory institutional charges. Check the currency and whether the amount covers a semester, academic year or the whole degree. Identify when later instalments are due and whether future years are priced differently.

If your plan includes preparatory or foundation study, cost that stage separately and ask what must happen before progression to the degree. An initial estimate should not be treated as a university quote.

Put recurring and one-off costs in separate columns

Compare the same categories for every institution, even if a quoted package groups several together. Request clarification when an item is not included.

  • Tuition, registration and compulsory university charges
  • Accommodation, deposits, utilities and everyday living costs
  • Insurance and any required immigration or medical process
  • Flights, local transport and travel during breaks
  • Document preparation, translation or verification where applicable
  • Consultancy charges and precisely agreed service inclusions

Ask what happens if plans change

Read the university’s payment, withdrawal and refund terms before paying. Ask whether deposits are refundable, which organisation receives a payment and how proof of payment is issued. Consultancy charges and external expenses should be identified separately.

If a scholarship is being considered, obtain the actual award terms and check which costs it covers. Do not deduct an unconfirmed scholarship or assumed part-time earnings from a budget you need to fund.

Keep the family’s own assumptions visible

A family paying from the GCC or India should note the exchange-rate assumption and payment dates used in a comparison. Include a reasonable allowance for changes in travel or living expenses, then revisit the budget when university information is confirmed.

For Malaysia, EMGS directs applicants to institution-specific tuition information and cost-planning resources. Other destinations also require current university-level confirmation. MetaSkills does not publish a universal price that guarantees the entire study journey.

Your questions

A clearer next step.

Are consultancy fees the same as university tuition?

No. Ask for consultancy charges, university payments and other third-party costs to be identified separately, with written inclusions and payment terms.

Can I compare two packages with different inclusions?

List the same cost categories and time period for both, then mark what is included, excluded or not yet confirmed. Request written clarification before deciding.
